When will I be billed?Travellers are only billed when collecting their car and not during the online reservation process - a great benefit. You will be billed by Europcar South Africa directly. You will however receive instant email confirmation that a car is secured for you. You can rest assure that a car will be available for you on arrival at the Car Rental office once you have received your Reservation voucher into your email.
Is my booking secure?Yes ! We do not request your Credit Card number when booking over the Internet. You book directly onto Europcar's live reservation system - the largest car hire group in South Africa. Unlimited KM / Miles for International Passport holders on all bookings (Passport holders from all Countries in Africa, including South Africa, receive Unlimited KM on rentals 4 days or longer, and 200 KM per day on rentals shorter than 4 days)

Excluded:
Refundable rental deposit of R 1500 - this will only be taken during collection of the Car and is only reserved (held) over your credit card (not charged), and released back onto your credit card when returning the car.
Contract fee of R 55 per rental (not per day)
Additional driver R 230 per rental, per driver (not per day)
Young Driver surcharge of R180 per day, per driver
Baby seats - R 270 per rental (not per day)
One way charges: A one-way drop off charge of R750 is levied for rentals terminating in excess of 150 kilometres from the original rental branch. There is also a one way fee of R114 for all rentals from Sandton to OR Tambo Airport, and OR Tambo Airport to Sandton.
Delivery and Collection fees (if you want the car to be dropped off to you at the start of the rental, or collected from somewhere at the end of the rental)
Traffic Fine Handling Fee of R 220 (if you receive a traffic fine)
Water and under-carriage damage to vehicles
Claim Handling Fee of R 550 (all Travellers - in the event of accident, theft or ANY damage Europcar will charge this standard claim admin fee regardless of rental package and cover selected). If the vehicle needs to be towed in case of accident, the renter is liable for the towing fee.
Tolling (toll road) fees                    

Cape Spirit Customers can reserve a GPS unit prior to arrival in South Africa to avoid the disappointment of no units being available due to the high demand. GPS units are available at all EUROPCAR branches in South Africa. The GPS unit may be collected from and returned to any Europcar Car Hire Branch in South Africa. GPS Rental cost is R 79 per day (include 14% VAT). Credit Card and ID / Passport compulsory, minimum age 21 years. If you require a GPS please request this in the final step of your reservation with Europcar through Cape Spirit™ by ticking the GPS box. Europcar requires 48 hours notice for a GPS reservation to guarantee a unit, please ensure that you book at least 48 hours in advance if you require a GPS rental.

Is there an Excess and how does the Excess work with Car Rentals?

1. Excess (Reduced Liability Waiver) on Classic Plus Cover:

The Excess Amount for Classic Plus Cover is different for International Passport holders, and Passport holders from all Countries in Africa including South Africa:

Classic Plus Cover: For International Passport holders (recommended package)

We offer ZERO EXCESS for all International Visitors/ International Passport Holders (holding a passport from another continent) who choose our Classic Plus Cover. Your car is fully insured in case of accident and theft if you choose Classic Plus Cover (see terms and conditions) Our Classic Plus Cover is the recommended option as you will also receive Tyre, Rim, Hubcap, Sandblasting and Windscreen Damage Cover* with this package.(*while driving in South Africa and Namibia only, for all Renters) We pride ourselves in our Classic Plus Cover package, as this package is simply one of the best South African car rental packages available to International Passport holders in the market. We recommend International Passport holders to book this package.

Classic Plus Cover: For Passport holders from all Countries in Africa including South Africa

Passport holders from all countries in Africa, including South Africa: There is a small excess for Passport holders from all countries in Africa choosing our Classic Plus Cover.

Classic Plus Excess amounts for Passport Holders from all countries in Africa ONLY (ZERO EXCESS FOR INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT HOLDERS):
Passport Holders from all countries in Africa including South Africa (choosing the Classic Plus Cover option) is liable for the excess amount in the event of theft / accident if you have not acted recklessly. The excess is authorised (reserved) over your credit card as a deposit when collecting the Car and released (refunded) back to you when returning the Car in the same condition. The excess for Classic Plus for Passport holders from all Africa countries including South Africa is as follows:
Group A- R3000 (Passport holders from all Africa Countries only, 0 excess for International Passport holders)

If you choose Classic Cover, there is an excess on your car rental Waiver for all Travellers (International and from Africa). The Renter is liable for the excess amount in the event of theft / accident if you have not acted recklessly. The excess is authorised (reserved) over your credit card as a deposit when collecting the Car and released (refunded) back to you when returning the Car in the same condition. The Excess amounts for the Classic Cover is as follows:

Cross Border Excess (on all rental packages if you are crossing the South African border, for all Travellers):

CROSS BORDER EXCESS (Local and International Travellers - please contact ian@capespirit.com for more details before booking a cross border rental). There will be a cross border excess if you travel over the South African borders and certain terms and conditions apply.
Mozambique or Zambia: An additional cross border excess of R7500 (which will be reserved as a refundable deposit on your credit card)
Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia: Please contact ian@capespirit.com for Cross Border excess details for the specific car group you plan to cross with.

Rental Deposit?There is a R1500 Rental Deposit with Europcar South Africa. The Rental Deposit is authorised (reserved) over the Main Driver's credit card when collecting the Car and released (refunded) back onto the credit card when returning the Car with a full tank of petrol again (you receive a full tank when collecting the car) Please note that the deposit amount is only authorised over your credit card and not charged, so no interest occurs on this hold on your card.
Contract fee?R 55 per booking (not per day)
What documents are required when I collect the Car?

Credit Card & Drivers License & ID / Passport
You, the Main Driver, must have a valid Credit Card to collect your car. (Visa, Mastercard and Diners accepted. Local or International credit cards welcome.) The credit card MUST be embossed (i.e. have raised number digits on the card).

No Debit Cards, including Maestro and Electron, are accepted. No cheque cards are accepted.

The Credit Card MUST be in the Main Driver's name. The Main Driver must hold a Valid Drivers License and must be present during the collection of the car. Driver/s must have legally driven in their home country on their home country's drivers license for at least two years prior to renting a vehicle. Driver/s must also present a valid ID or Passport, as well as the Booking Voucher that you receive in your email after online reservation. (no booking voucher – no car)

Please note that although we do not request your Credit Card details during the reservation, it is still compulsory to have a valid credit card and present it to the Car rental office during the collection of your car. No cash, cheque cards or debit cards are accepted. (South African credit cards - please note that budget facility transactions are not allowed - only straight transactions)

Please note that passport holders from all countries in Africa (including South Africa) need to have 2 credit cards in the Main Driver's name to hire any of the following car groups: Group H, O, W, E. The Branch may sometimes split the rental-and excess deposit between the 2 credit cards, or just require the 2nd credit card for a security check. (If you are unsure please contact Cape Spirit). International passport holders only need 1 credit card in the Main Driver's name for these car groups.

International Customers:
Please apply for an International Drivers license (in English) if your Drivers License is not in English. Alternatively you can also get an English translation from your Traffic Department in your home country (on the Traffic Department's official letterhead / stamped / certified by your Traffic Department) if your drivers license is not in English. All other requirements and terms and conditions remain the same. Please take your Original Drivers License together with your International Drivers license OR your Original Drivers License together with the Official English translation from your local Traffic Department to South Africa.

If your drivers license is in English you do not have to apply for an International Drivers license or translation.
Other Important Info

Long term car rentals get billed on a monthly basis over your credit card, and not the full amount at once.

Please note that you book a specific car group and can receive any car within the group that you have booked. If you have a preference for a specific car model, please contact ian@capespirit.com with your reservation number and we will try our best to arrange that model for you. It is however not 100% guaranteed.

A one-way drop off charge of R750 is levied for rentals terminating in excess of 150 kilometers from the original rental branch.

International passport holders receive Unlimited KM on all car rentals, from day 1. Passport holders from all countries in Africa (including South Africa) receive Unlimited KM for rentals 4 days or longer. For rentals less than 4 days by Africa passport holders, it is 200KM per day.

Towbar or trailers can unfortunately not be supplied by Europcar. If you want to hire an 8 seater with a towbar/trailer, please contact ian@capespirit.com for more info.

From South Africa vehicles are allowed into Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Zambia. Vehicles are not allowed into Angola or Zimbabwe.
The following exceptions do apply –
South Africa to Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia – No restriction on vehicle groups (except groups H and O - no cross borders are allowed for groups H and O into any country)
South Africa to Mozambique and Zambia – Only car groups A, T, B, C, D & F are allowed into Mozambique and Zambia. International passport holders (not from countries in Africa) are permitted to cross with groups W, P, S & E. Africa countries passport holders must have Europcar's Approval to cross into Mozambique and Zambia for groups W, P, S and E - please contact Cape Spirit™ to arrange.
Please note that Groups H and O may not cross into any country.

A non refundable fee of R 1400 will be levied for vehicles crossing into Mozambique and Zambia. For Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia and Lesotho a R 750 cross border charge will be levied.
