You can choose to pay only upon vehicle collection (i.e. no prepayment required - this is the recommended option), OR immediately during online reservation / time of booking (full prepayment). You will be billed by First Car Rental. There is no difference in the rental amount if you choose to pay on arrival or during time of booking. Please note that all Western Cape and Eastern Cape Car Hire between 15 Dec and 3 Jan, requires full prepayment to confirm your reservation. Full prepayment may also be required for some high season periods in other locations.
Payment option 1 (Pay when I collect the vehicle - we recommend that you choose this option): If you choose to pay only upon
vehicle collection (and not during time of booking), you will receive instant booking confirmation that a car has been reserved for you. You can rest assure that a car will be available for you on arrival at the Car Rental office once you have received your Reservation voucher into your email. You will pay for your rental upon vehicle collection at the Rental office. (Please choose payment option 1 for all Long term rentals longer than 30 days. If you choose this payment option, long term car rentals get billed on a monthly basis over your credit card, and not the full amount at once.) Please note that all Western Cape and Eastern Cape Car Hire between 15 Dec and 3 Jan, requires full prepayment to confirm your reservation. Full prepayment may also be required for some high season periods in other locations.
Payment option 2 (Pay now online with a credit card): If you choose to pay for your car rental during the time of booking (prepayment), please note that the pre-paid amount is non-refundable (When amending to a lower amount, or if entire booking is cancelled, before or after vehicle collection.) If you choose to make prepayment during online reservation, please note that the Main driver still requires a credit card in his/her name upon vehicle collection for deposit authorisation and security purposes. Please also note that the prepaid amount relates to your rental amount only, and does not include extras like the R45 contract fee, one way fee, additional drivers, baby seats, young driver surcharge, collection fees, cross border fees and other extra items (mostly not applicable) - this will be charged on your credit card when you return the car to the rental office.

Our South Africa Car Hire packages exclude the following standard items: (relevant on all rentals)

-Optional Personal Accident Benefit (PAB): R16 per day (optional - please buy this at car rental counter if required)
-Windscreen Breakage-, Glass-, Mirrors-, Windows-, Water-, Undercarriage-, Water Damage-, Tyre-, Rim-, Hubcap Damage is not covered

Our Car Hire packages exclude the following "other / extra" items: (for most rentals this is not relevant)
-Additional Driver R 190 (incl VAT) per rental (not per day)
-One Way Fee (if you collect and return the vehicle at different locations - this additional One Way fee amount will display during online reservation, if applicable)
-Baby/Child Seat (provide Age & Weight upon reservation) R 200 (incl VAT) per rental (not per day), Booster Seat R150
-Young Driver Surcharge (driver below 23 years of age) R 150 per day (incl VAT)
-Cross Border Fee. Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia: R 1000 (incl VAT) per country.  Mozambique: R1500 (incl VAT)
(Only allowed for Group A, B, C and D into these countries) The cross border fee for Lesotho and Swaziland is less (All car groups may cross into Lesotho and Swaziland) - R400 (incl VAT) for Lesotho and R200 (incl VAT) for Swaziland. A cross border fee is charged for each country that you cross into. Please contact us before making a cross border booking.
-Cross Border Excess (in the event that you will be crossing into another country - see cross border info at our Frequently Asked Questions section)
-Towbar - only available for Group Y, contact Cape Spirit™ before booking - subject to Manager confirmation

-No Show Charge R 500 - in the event of a no show without canceling the booking
-Traffic Fine Handling Fee - R 190 per fine - in the event that you receive a traffic fine this admin fee will be charged in addition to the traffic fine
-Claim Handling Fee R 450 (incl VAT) (applicable to damages exceeding R500 incl. VAT) and Towing Fee - in the event of accident, damage or theft an administrative claim handling fee is charged regardless of the car rental package of the reservation. If the vehicle needs to be towed in the case of an accident, the renter is liable for the towing fee.
-Valet - (Only if the car is returned with excessive dirt) Group A to E R200 and Group F to Y R250
-Mobile / Cellphone - Insurance and Rental per day: Cell R9.95 Sim R3.95 3G R20 per day R2.50 per Meg. Refundable Mobile Excess Deposit: Cell from R500 deposit Sim R150 deposit 3G R1370 deposit. Cell call charges: Local from R2.40 per min International from R7.90 per min. SMS Charges: Local R1.00 International R2.00. All Mobile / Cellphone Charges excl. VAT (14 percent), Credit Card and ID or Passport compulsory; and available at and can be returned to only Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth Airports.

-Cape Spirit™ Customers may reserve a GPS Satellite Navigation unit prior to arrival in South Africa to avoid the disappointment of no units being available due to the high demand. GPS units are available at Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth Airports only. The GPS unit may only be collected from and returned to Car Hire branches at these 4 locations. GPS Rental cost is R 59 per day. Refundable GPS Excess deposit is R1500. All GPS Charges exclude 14% VAT. Credit Card and ID / Passport compulsory, minimum age 21 years. If you require a GPS please request this in the "other info" box during the final step of your online reservation with First Car Rental through Cape Spirit™.

Is there an Excess and how does the Excess work with Car Rentals?



What is the difference between Standard Package, Super Package and Executive Package?

There is NO EXCESS DEPOSIT with our Executive Cover option - meaning that your car is fully insured for damage and theft (refer to terms and conditions and exclusions above) (please note that executive cover is not available for weekend-only rentals)

(Should you choose the Standard Cover option there is an Excess Deposit of R 7000. If you choose Super Cover the Excess Deposit is R 4000. This amount will be secured (authorised/hold) as a deposit on your credit card when collecting the car, and refunded back to you (released back onto your credit card) when you return the car in the same condition. The excess is the maximum amount payable in the event of accident, damage or theft - please refer to terms and conditions and inclusions / exclusions) Please note that the excess amount is only authorised over your credit card and not charged, so no interest occurs on this hold on your card.


The Standard Cover package has an Excess of R 7000 (liability - your maximum responsibility) in the event of accident, damage or theft. The Super Cover package has an Excess of R 4000 (liability - your maximum responsibility) in the event of accident, damage or theft.
The Executive Cover Package has a Zero Excess (zero liability) meaning your Car is fully insured in the event of accident, damage or theft, if you have acted in good faith and within the SA Laws and Terms and Conditions. (please note that executive cover is not available for weekend-only rentals)

With Standard Cover First Car Rental will authorise an excess deposit amount of R 7000 on your credit card during collection of the car, and refund this amount back to you when you return the car in the same condition. With Super Cover First Car Rental will authorise an excess deposit amount of R 4000 on your credit card during collection of the car, and refund this amount back to you when you return the car in the same condition.
With Executive Cover no excess amount will be authorised over your credit card during collection of the car, as your car is fully insured for theft and damages. (please note that executive cover is not available for weekend-only rentals)
Fuel & Windscreen breakage Deposit?
There is a R2000 Fuel & Windscreen damage Deposit (incl VAT) for all rental packages (executive, super and standard).The Deposit is authorised (reserved) over the Main Driver's credit card when collecting the Car and released (refunded) back to the Main Driver's credit card when returning the Car with a full tank of petrol again (you receive a full tank when collecting the car) and with no Windscreen damages.

What documents are required when I collect the Car ?




Credit Card & Drivers License & ID / Passport

You must produce a valid embossed Credit Card (credit card with raised number digits) (no Debit Cards or cash accepted!) to collect your car. (Visa, Mastercard, Diners Card, American Express accepted - local and international credit cards welcome) The Credit Card MUST be in the Main Driver's name (i.e. the main driver's name must appear on the credit card). No cars will be issued without the Credit Card in the Main Driver's name. The Driver must hold and present a Valid Drivers License and must be present during the Car Rental collection and return. Driver/s must also present a valid ID or Passport, as well as the booking confirmation that you receive into your email after online reservation. Driver/s must have legally driven in their home country for at least three years prior to renting a vehicle. (Please note that the Main Driver's Passport /ID and Driver’s licence must be issued by the same country.)

Please note that whether you have made prepayment or not for your car rental, it is still compulsory to have a valid embossed Credit Card (credit card with raised number digits) in the name of the Main Driver and present it to the Car rental office during the collection of your car. No cash or debit cards including Maestro and Electron debit cards are accepted. (South African credit card holders: please note that budget facility transactions are not allowed - only straight transactions)

International Customers:
You will be required to apply for an International Drivers license (in English) if your Drivers License is not in English. Alternatively you can also get an English translation from your Traffic Department in your home country (on the Traffic Department's official letterhead / stamped / certified by your Traffic Department) if your drivers license is not in English. All other requirements and terms and conditions remain the same. Please take your Original Drivers License together with your International Drivers license OR your Original Drivers License together with the Official English translation from your local Traffic Department to South Africa.

If your drivers license is in English you do not have to apply for an International Drivers license or translation. Just bring your valid English drivers license with you.
Other Important Info

Please note that First car rental's waiver does not cover travelling on gravel roads. If you plan to travel on gravel roads, please book with Europcar here

Please note: Windscreen Breakage, Glass, Mirrors, Windows, Water-, Undercarriage-, Water Damage-, Tyre-, Rim-, Hubcap Damage is NOT covered

Long term rentals longer than 30 days: Please choose payment option 1 "Pay when I collect the Vehicle" for all Long term rentals during online reservation. If you choose this payment option, long term car rentals get billed on a monthly basis over your credit card, and not the full amount at once.

No delivery of car: Cars cannot be delivered to private (or any other) addresses. Please note that all cars must be collected from a First Car Rental Branch.

Car groups and models: Please note that you book a specific car group and can receive any car model within the group that you have booked. You can view the different car groups and car models within each car group here.You can type your car model preference in the “Other Info” box during online reservation, but please note that First Car Rental cannot guarantee that you will receive your preferred car model and it can be any car model within your reserved car group.

If you plan to hire more than one car at the same time and location: Please contact Cape Spirit™ before making your bookings so that we can arrange with the Branch Manager.

One way rentals: An additional one way fee may apply if you return the car to a different rental location - this additional one way fee will display during your online reservation, if applicable.

If you require a towbar / trailer please contact Cape Spirit™ before you make your booking.

Cross border rentals: If you plan to travel over the South African borders please contact Cape Spirit™ before making your booking. The following vehicles are not permitted to cross any borders: Groups E, F, G, I, Z, K, Y, Q  (Except Swaziland and Lesotho). For all other groups a refundable Cross Border Excess Deposit of R 7000 (Executive Cover) or R 8 000 (Super Cover) or R 14 000 (Standard Cover) will apply when crossing the borders. 4 Days advance notification is required for Zimbabwe cross borders as authorities now require the original registration documents for all vehicles crossing the border.
