Long and Kloof Streets Travel Guide

These are vibrant city streets with plenty of wine bars and restaurants. When the sun goes down Long street becomes alive with people and city lights. Antique shops, second hand bookstores and other specialist shops make the street an exciting place to visit during daytime too. Further up towards Table Mountain, Long street becomes Kloof. A walk through Kloof Street and further on to Tamboerskloof is a pleasant way to experience young Cape Town suburban life.

Start exploring Long Street on the corner of Long and Strand Street, and walk in a southern direction towards Table Mountain. It is a charming walk with interesting shops, beautiful architecture, small restaurants, pubs and cafes along the way.

Allow yourself enough time to explore what’s on offer – you can easily spend three hours just in Long Street if you visit all the shops. Antique lovers should not miss the Long Street Antique Arcade with its 17 antique stores under one roof, as well as a visit to Church Street off Long. Other interesting Long Street shops include The African Music Store and The Pan African Market.

The street is a perfect blend of African and European cultures, and comes alive at dawn. To experience the night buzz of Cape Town, head for Long over weekends.

As you reach the end of Long continue into Kloof Street. Although this street is not a major tourist attraction, it gives one a good feel of what Cape Town city living in the shadows of  the Mountain is all about. Visit the small and intimate Lifestyle Shopping Centre, a cheerful centre with a bookshop, coffee shops, cinema, restaurants and a view other interesting stores.

From here you can extend your walk further along Kloof until you reach Camp street, where you can turn left towards the beautiful De Waal Park. Alternatively you can visit the beautiful suburban streets of Tamboerskloof (Drummer’s ravine) located in the shadows of Signal Hill.
