2. Read and accept the Important Car Hire Info and Europcar Terms and Conditions as you will hire the Vehicle from Europcar South Africa.

What are the requirements to hire a car from Cape Spirit™ / Europcar?

You will be asked to produce the following documents when collecting the Car:

1. Your ID / Passport.
2. Your valid Credit Card - Visa, Mastercard or Diners (The Credit Card MUST be in the name of the Driver. No Debit Cards, Cheque cards or Cash accepted. Local or International credit cards are welcome.) The Credit Card must be embossed (i.e. have raised number digits on the card).
3. Valid Driver’s license (Driver/s must have legally driven in their home country on their home country's drivers license for at least two years prior to renting a vehicle.)
4. Your Car Rental Voucher / Booking Confirmation (which you will receive into your email once you have booked your Car online) No Voucher - no car.

The Driver MUST be present during the collection of the Car.

Vehicles are only rented to drivers over the age of 23.

Please note that passport holders from all countries in Africa (including South Africa) need to have 2 credit cards in the Main Driver's name to hire any of the following larger car groups: Group H, O, P, S, W, E. International passport holders only need 1 credit card in the Main Driver's name for these car groups.

I am a foreign citizen visiting South Africa. Can I book a car on Cape Spirit™ and do I require any additional documents?

Yes, anyone from around the Globe can use our service and our car rental packages are specifically tailored to cater for the International market.

International Customers:
Please apply for an International Drivers license (in English) if your Drivers License is not in English. Alternatively you can also get an English translation from your Traffic Department in your home country (on the Traffic Department's official letterhead / stamped / certified by your Traffic Department) if your drivers license is not in English. All other requirements and terms and conditions remain the same. Please take your Original Drivers License together with your International Drivers license OR your Original Drivers License together with the Official English translation from your local Traffic Department to South Africa.

If your drivers license is in English you do not have to apply for an International Drivers license - just bring your valid English language drivers license with you.

Do I need to do anything else after booking my car on Cape Spirit™ ?

No, once your booking is confirmed and you receive your reservation number into your email, you are not required to do anything else*. Your booking and reservation number will be confirmed into your email within 1 minute after you have booked online. Just bring your required documents to the Europcar Car Rental Office, and your car will be ready for collection. You do not have to confirm your booking before arrival.

You can rest assure that a car will be available for you on arrival at the Car Rental office once you have received your Reservation voucher and number into your email. In the unlikely event that you do not receive your booking confirmation into your email after online reservation, please contact Cape Spirit immediately.

What is the availability of Cars and will my reservation be honoured ?

You can view live availability on our live booking system located at our Europcar Car Hire Booking Page Once you have received your booking confirmation and reservation number into your email, your reservation will be honoured.

Do you require my Credit Card number when making an online booking ?

No, we do not ask for your Credit Card number during the booking process. Please note that although we do not request your Credit Card details during the reservation, it is still compulsory to have a valid credit card (in the name of the Main Driver) and present it to the Car rental office during the collection of your car, where Europcar South Africa will bill you. No cash, cheque cards or debit cards are accepted.

When will I be billed for the rental ?

Only when collecting the Car and not during time of booking. You will be billed directly by Europcar South Africa. You will however receive instant booking confirmation that a car has been reserved for you.

Where do I collect my Car and what will happen when I arrive there ?

You will collect your Car at the Europcar Branch at your selected location. You will receive directions and contact details for the specific Europcar Branch on your booking confirmation that will be emailed to you. You can also view the Europcar Branch info here

When you arrive at the Branch your Car Rental Contract will be ready for signature and you will be assisted by the Professional and Friendly Europcar Staff. You will be asked to produce your Credit Card, Valid Drivers License, Rental Voucher / Booking Confirmation and ID / Passport. Your Excess amount (For Classic Plus Cover only Passport Holders from Countries in Africa, including South Africa), Fuel / Rental Deposit and Rental amount will be authorised (held/blocked) over your Credit Card, and the Excess amount and Fuel / Rental Deposit will be refunded (released) back to your credit card when returning the Car. (International passport holders receive Unlimited KM on all car rentals, from day 1. Passport holders from all countries in Africa, including South Africa, receive Unlimited KM for rentals 4 days or longer. For rentals less than 4 days by Africa passport holders, you receive 200 KM per day.)

Young Driver surcharge of R180 per day, per driver

One way charges: A one-way drop off charge of R750 is levied for rentals terminating in excess of 150 kilometres from the original rental branch. There is also a one way fee of R114 for all rentals from Sandton to OR Tambo Airport, and OR Tambo Airport to Sandton.
Delivery and Collection fees (if you want the car to be dropped off to you at the start of the rental, or collected from somewhere at the end of the rental)
Traffic Fine Handling Fee of R 220 (if you receive a traffic fine)
Water and under-carriage damage to vehicles
Claim Handling Fee of R 550 (all Travellers - in the event of accident, theft or ANY damage Europcar will charge this standard claim admin fee regardless of rental package and cover selected). If the vehicle needs to be towed in case of accident, the renter is liable for the towing fee.
Tolling (toll road) fees                    

Cape Spirit Customers can reserve a GPS unit prior to arrival in South Africa to avoid the disappointment of no units being available due to the high demand. GPS units are available at all EUROPCAR branches in South Africa. The GPS unit may be collected from and returned to any Europcar Car Hire Branch in South Africa. GPS Rental cost is R 79 per day (include 14% VAT). Credit Card and ID / Passport compulsory, minimum age 21 years. If you require a GPS please request this in the final step of your reservation with Europcar through Cape Spirit™ by ticking the GPS box. Europcar requires 48 hours notice for a GPS reservation to guarantee a unit, please ensure that you book at least 48 hours in advance if you require a GPS rental.


Is there an Excess and how does the Excess work with Car Rentals?

1. Excess (Reduced Liability Waiver) on Classic Plus Cover:

The Excess Amount for Classic Plus Cover is different for International Passport holders, and Passport holders from all Countries in Africa including South Africa:

Classic Plus Cover: For International Passport holders (recommended package)

We offer ZERO EXCESS for all International Visitors/ International Passport Holders (holding a passport from another continent) who choose our Classic Plus Cover. Your car is fully insured in case of accident and theft if you choose Classic Plus Cover (see terms and conditions) Our Classic Plus Cover is the recommended option as you will also receive Tyre, Rim, Hubcap, Sandblasting and Windscreen Damage Cover* with this package.(*while driving in South Africa and Namibia only, for all Renters) We pride ourselves in our Classic Plus Cover package, as this package is simply one of the best South African car rental packages available to International Passport holders in the market. We recommend International Passport holders to book this package.

Classic Plus Cover: For Passport holders from all Countries in Africa including South Africa

Passport holders from all countries in Africa, including South Africa: There is a small excess for Passport holders from all countries in Africa choosing our Classic Plus Cover.

Classic Plus Excess amounts for Passport Holders from all countries in Africa ONLY (ZERO EXCESS FOR INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT HOLDERS):
Passport Holders from all countries in Africa including South Africa (choosing the Classic Plus Cover option) is liable for the excess amount in the event of theft / accident if you have not acted recklessly. The excess is authorised (reserved) over your credit card as a deposit when collecting the Car and released (refunded) back to you when returning the Car in the same condition. Is there a Fuel / Rental deposit and how does it work ?

There is a R1500 Rental Deposit with Europcar South Africa. The Petrol Deposit is authorised (reserved) over your credit card when collecting the Car and released (refunded) back to your credit card when returning the Car with a full tank of petrol again (you receive a full tank when collecting the car). Please note that the deposit is only authorised over your credit card and not charged, so no interest occurs on this hold on your card.

How can I work out the exact amount and deposit that I will pay Europcar South Africa through Cape Spirit™ ?

A cross border excess will apply if you cross into another country (for all rental packages, for all Travellers). Please contact Ian Gouws ian@capespirit.com for more details. Responsibilities/Excesses of the country in which the accident/theft occurs will apply regardless of the country in which the rental commenced.

Mozambique or Zambia: Additional excess of R7500 (which will be reserved / held as a refundable deposit on your credit card) applies on all rentals where accident / theft has occurred in Mozambique or Zambia. Please contact Ian Gouws ian@capespirit.com for more details

I am planning to collect and return the Vehicle at different locations. Is there a One Way fee and how much is this?

Cape Spirit™ purely acts as a Tour Operator for Europcar South Africa and you will have to read, understand and accept Europcar South Africa's Booking Terms & Conditions before booking your car. How do I amend or cancel a booking ?

Please remember to amend or cancel your booking if your travel arrangements have changed, so that we can make the car available to someone else. You can contact ian@capespirit.com with your reservation number, to amend or cancel the booking on your behalf.

We have a baby / babies. Can we request a baby/child seat and how much does this cost?

Yes, you can request a baby/child seat at the “Optional extras” menu when booking your Car online (final stage of booking).  A baby seat costs R270 for the entire rental period.

I require a GPS Satellite Navigation System for my South African Car Rental. Can you assist?

Cape Spirit™ Customers can reserve a GPS unit prior to arrival in South Africa to avoid the disappointment of no units being available due to the high demand.

GPS units are available at all EUROPCAR branches in South Africa. The GPS unit may be collected from and returned to any Europcar Car Hire Branch in South Africa.

GPS Rental cost is R 79 per day (include 14% VAT). Credit Card and ID / Passport compulsory, minimum age 21 years.

If you require a GPS please request this in the final step of your reservation with Europcar through Cape Spirit™ by ticking the GPS box. Europcar requires 48 hours notice for a GPS reservation to guarantee a unit, please ensure that you book at least 48 hours in advance if you require a GPS rental.

I require a tow bar / trailer / roof rack. Can you assist ?

Unfortunately no tow bars, trailers or roof racks are provided by Europcar.

I require the Car to be delivered to me and/or collected. Can you assist ?

Yes, Europcar South Africa can deliver or collect a Car at the following delivery / collection rates:

OFFICE HOURS
25 kilometres or less, R250 (per delivery and/or collection)
26 kilometres or more, R250 plus R10 per kilometre over 26 km

AFTER HOURS (between 17:00 and 8:00 weekdays, on weekends and public holidays)
25 kilometres or less, R460 (per delivery and/or collection)
26 kilometres or more, R460 plus R10 per kilometre over 26 km

Can I take the Car into another country ?

PLEASE CONTACT IAN GOUWS ian@capespirit.com IF YOU PLAN TO DRIVE OVER THE SOUTH AFRICAN BORDERS, SO THAT WE CAN PROVIDE THE CORRECT INFO TO YOU AND ARRANGE THE REQUIRED PAPERWORK.

A letter of authorisation must be requested at the time of reservation for all cross border travelling. (All travellers who will be travelling cross border need to contact Cape Spirit™ before making a reservation.)

Europcar South Africa or Cape Spirit™ will not be held responsible if a Renter is refused entry into another country.

All vehicles entering Namibia will have to pay a Cross Border charge. A Cross Border Certificate will be issued by the Namibian authorities. All Cross Border documentation is to be left in the glove compartment or handed to a Europcar representative. A penalty/fee of up to ZAR 5 000 may be levied if the documentation is not produced/found.

From South Africa vehicles are allowed into Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Zambia. Vehicles are not allowed into Angola or Zimbabwe.
The following exceptions do apply –
South Africa to Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia – No restriction on vehicle groups (except groups H and O - no cross borders are allowed for groups H and O into any country by any Traveller)
South Africa to Mozambique and Zambia – Only car groups A, T, B, C, D & F are allowed into Mozambique and Zambia. International passport holders (not from countries in Africa) are permitted to cross with groups W, P, S & E. Passport holders from countries in Africa, including South Africa, must have Europcar's Approval to cross into Mozambique and Zambia with groups W, P, S and E - please contact Cape Spirit™ to arrange.
Please note that Groups H and O may not cross into any country.

A non-refundable cross border fee of ZAR 1400 will be levied for all vehicles crossing into Mozambique and Zambia. For Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia and Lesotho a ZAR 750 cross border charge (non-refundable) will be levied. The cross border fee is charged for each country you cross into.

One way drop off's are not permitted in Mozambique or Zambia.


CROSS BORDER EXCESSES (Local and International Travellers, for all rental packages)

A cross border excess will apply if you cross into another country (for all rental packages, for all travellers). Please contact Ian Gouws ian@capespirit.com for more details. Responsibilities/Excesses of the country in which the accident/theft occurs will apply regardless of the country in which the rental commenced.

Mozambique or Zambia: Additional excess of R7500 (which will be reserved / held as a refundable deposit on your credit card) applies on all rentals where accident / theft has occurred in Mozambique or Zambia. Please contact Ian Gouws ian@capespirit.com for more details
