Group A - 2010 Football World cup - South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France
Group A promises to be a tough group and offers the hosts, South Africa, a serious challenge if they are to live up to the tradition of host teams reaching the second round and live up to the expectations they placed on themselves with a very impressive Confederations Cup performance. Home teams have been the beneficiary of home ground advantage in the past and it looks likely that the Bafana Bafana may need some of this advantage to progress.

Group B is an interesting mix of teams from four different continents. Argentina is the main footballing powerhouse in the group and is a fair bet to progress in first place. Nigeria should have some great African support which should motivate their already quick and powerful squad. Greece and South Korea are both hard-working and disciplined teams. Are they capable of providing an upset in Group B? It’s a possibility as both are capable of holding either Argentina or Nigeria to a draw. Whether either side has what it takes to beat the Group B favourites is not so certain.

Group C - 2010 Football World cup - England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia
Even though it is often said that there are no easy games in the World Cup, England fans will undoubtedly be happy with this Group C draw. England has managed to avoid all of the main European, South American and African threats. The USA could pose a potential problem, but both Algeria and Slovenia are far from being World Cup favourites.

Group D - 2010 Football World cup - Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana
If trying to predict the outcome of Group D on team reputation alone, then Germany would look the most likely winners. However, on closer examination, Group D is not so clear-cut. Australia, Serbia and Ghana are, like Germany, strong and physical teams. Strength and stamina will be vital for any team wishing to make it through to the next round. The current FIFA World Rankings have Germany in 6th place while Serbia are ranked 19th, Australia 21st and Ghana are down in 34th position. Rankings, however, like reputation, can often be misleading. Group D will be a gruelling test for all the teams involved.

Group E - 2010 Football World cup- Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
Group E is not only an interesting mix of footballing styles; it is also a mix of footballing mentalities. The Netherlands is the big name in the group and the favourite to progress. However, despite being hot favourites, the Dutch players can also be hot-headed. Denmark will be looking to capitalise upon any squad disharmony amongst the Dutch. Japan will work hard, and they’ll need to, in order to get anything from this group. Cameroon, meanwhile, is often an unknown quantity.

Group F - 2010 Football World cup - Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia
Italy will be going head-to-head against some of the World Cup’s lesser known teams in Group F. The current FIFA World Rankings have Italy ranked 4th while Paraguay are ranked 29th, Slovakia 33rd and New Zealand 77th. If this is anything to go by, Italy should not be too concerned about progressing to the knockout stages.

Group G - 2010 Football World cup - Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal
Three footballing giants from three different continents will confront each other in perhaps the World Cup’s most fascinating group. North Korea (Korea DPR) is the unfortunate minnow thrown in amongst Brazil, Portugal and the Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire).

Group H - 2010 Football World cup - Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile
As reigning European champions and the top team in FIFA’s World Rankings, Spain would be expected to reach the knockout round in South Africa. Looking at Group H, qualification would seem a certainty. The Spanish have been gifted one of the weakest groups in the World Cup. Switzerland, Honduras and Chile are unlikely to trouble a Spanish team tipped by many as 2010 World Cup winners.
